How do I record charges being committed to a higher court?

When a Magistrates Court file is committed, record it from the Charges tab so the file history, documents and matching all follow the move.

  1. Open the client's Charges tab and find the Mags file group.
  2. Click the menu on the file group and choose Commit to higher court.
  3. Tick the charges that were committed, enter the higher-court file number, and choose District Court or Supreme Court.
  4. Choose what happens to any un-ticked charges: they can stay at the Magistrates Court, be marked discontinued, or be linked for sentence with the new file.
Matching follows the committal

District and Supreme Court law lists publish surnames only, so a client who matched by full name at the Magistrates Court would otherwise go quiet after a committal. When you commit (or link a file for sentence), Acquit turns on surname-only matching for the chosen court's criminal list and sends you a notification confirming what changed. If surname matches are more than you want for this client, the notification links to the client's Courts section where you can turn them straight back off.
