Use the import wizard on the Clients page to bulk-import clients from a CSV or Excel file instead of adding them one by one.
- Open the Clients page and click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Import Clients to open the wizard.
- Upload your file. It needs at least a name column, and Excel files are fine as they come.
- Set the defaults: client type (Client, Lead, or Archived), source, and which courts to monitor.
- Review the preview, then confirm.
Acquit adds the clients and starts checking the court lists for matches straight away.
Getting the file out of your practice management system
The instructions are built into the wizard. On the upload screen, open Need to get your client list out of your practice management system? and pick your software: LEAP, Actionstep, Smokeball, Clio, FilePro, Affinity, or anything that can export a CSV. LEAP users upload the Matter List and Client Details reports together. The same guide appears on the setup screen at first sign-in, and if you would rather do it on a call, choose Ask for a hand: we email you to set a time and walk it through with you.
File numbers
A File Number (or “Matter No”) column is imported onto each matter automatically. File numbers make calendar matching bulletproof: an entry containing the number is pinned straight to the right matter. You can also set one later from the chip in the client’s page header, and search finds clients by file number too.
Updating clients you already imported
Run the same wizard with Update my existing clients ticked, uploading one or more reports in one go. Acquit matches rows to your existing clients by name and fills in only what is missing: file number, phone, email, date of birth, matter description, and the instruction date as the matter’s opened date. A blank cell never wipes anything, re-uploading the same report is harmless, and no new clients are created; the result screen shows exactly what was updated.
Importing at a firm
Pick Allocate to on the upload screen: yourself, a colleague, or Leave in the firm pool. How allocation and duplicate handling work: see How does a firm import decide where clients go?.
Tip: the same three-dot menu offers Export Clients (CSV, XLSX, or PDF).
