Tools Offence lookup (GOAT)

How do I look up a criminal offence in the GOAT Tool?

Type a charge name, keyword, legislation or section number into the GOAT Tool and it returns the maximum and minimum penalties, court election, bail restrictions and committal pathways for any Queensland criminal offence.

  1. Go to the Tools page from the sidebar and click the The GOAT Tool card.
  2. Type your search (at least 2 characters). A bare section number works on its own: 335 finds Common assault, and lettered siblings such as s335A come with it.
  3. Click a result to open the full detail. Set the specific charge, prior convictions and any circumstance of aggravation on the result, and the answers update to match.

The full page puts the offence lookup, the drug schedule lookup and the reference guides on one screen.

Quick lookup from anywhere

For an answer without leaving the page you’re on, click Quick lookup instead, which opens the same search in a drawer. The drawer is also on the Tools menu in the header, and on G then G from anywhere in the app.

How results are organised

A charge is one result, not one row per variant: Stealing is a single row (s 398) rather than fourteen, and where the variants carry different maximums the row shows the span. You pick the variant on the result.

Dangerous operation of a vehicle is under the Criminal Code only. Searching TORUM finds nothing, because TORUM sets the disqualification but creates no such offence; the disqualification periods sit on the Code result.

Checking an answer

“Checked, not applicable” is an answer: the schedule or flag was assessed and the offence is not in it. Open the Why panel to see the exact provisions an answer relies on, each linked to the section on the Queensland legislation website, plus any caveat that qualifies it.

For older matters, see How do I check an offence as it stood at an earlier date?

Tip: Manual search mode drills down by legislation, then charge, then specific charge and aggravation, step by step.

Note: a free public version also lives at acquit.app/goat, handy for colleagues who don’t have an account yet.
