Account & Security

How do I close my account, and what happens to my data?

You can close your account in two ways, both in SettingsProfile under Account actions: deactivate it, or delete it permanently. Download your data first; the export is on the same page and works even after your subscription ends.

Deactivate

Click Deactivate, enter your password, and tick the confirmation box.

This takes effect immediately: you’re signed out everywhere, your subscription is cancelled so you won’t be billed again, and the account can no longer be signed in to. Your data is kept for 90 days, then permanently deleted.

Note: There is no self-service undo, but if you contact support within the 90 days we can usually restore the account.

Delete permanently

If you want your data gone rather than parked, click Delete permanently, enter your password, and type DELETE to confirm.

Your subscription is cancelled straight away and everything is erased 7 days later; the exact date is shown on the page. Until then you can undo it yourself: a Cancel deletion button appears in the same place, and on the subscribe screen (cancelling your billing means that’s where you land). After that date, nothing can be recovered by you or by us.

Cancelling the deletion keeps your data but does not restart your subscription, so you’d choose a plan again to keep using Acquit.

What is kept either way

Records that are yours alone are deleted outright. Where a record involves another firm (a court appearance someone covered for you, for example) the appearance stays, but your name and contact details are removed; the other firm has its own history to keep. Payment records are kept for five years because Australian tax rules require it, and security logs for 12 months with the username removed.

Note: If you’re part of a firm, use Leave firm on the same page first, because your client files belong to the firm and need reassigning before the account can be erased.

The full detail, including where your data is stored, is on our security page.
